On July 4, 1932: The Free Press reported that a domestic dispute on Ashburn Street ended in tragedy after a man, a well-known local telegraph operator, barricaded himself and his wife inside their home, mortally wounded her, and then, trapped by police tear gas bombs, shot himself through the heart. British newspaper magnate Lord Rothermere told the Free Press that the imperial economic conference being held in Ottawa must succeed or that Canada and the rest of the British Commonwealth would feel the disastrous effects.
