On July 5, 1946: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a general peace conference for Europe in the wake of the Second World War had been called for July 29. Governor General of Canada Viscount Alexander visited Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg wearing the gold and red khaki of an Imperial field marshal, spending time there with men who had served under him in Canada’s First Division.
