On July 5, 1951: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Princess Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Phillip, were planning to tour Canada in October. A recent front-page story in the Winnipeg Free Press on gambling in the city was described as “ridiculous and absurd” by chief constable Charles MacIver, who disputed the accuracy of the entire article. U.S. president Harry Truman warned that the world faced a “long period of international danger” even if peace were to come in Korea.
