River search ends tragically: A public vigil is scheduled for today at 4:30 p.m. at Ernie O’Dowda Park for Darius Bezecki, 9, whose body was pulled from the Red River on Sunday. Darius’ family said he will be remembered as a happy boy who was “always smiling.” Maggie McIntosh reports. READ MORE

On July 6, 1915: The Manitoba Free Press reported that as the Great War wore on, the Turks suffered heavy troop losses in the latest battle in the Dardanelles. There was fierce fighting between Italian forces and Austro-Hungarian troops on the Austrian frontier. Former attorney general of Manitoba J.H. Howden told a royal commission of the political world in which he had moved, in which men did not speak in definitive terms and secrecy was widespread, and people knew when to look the other way; Howden told the commission of a $50,000 arrangement he was involved in that would keep the government in power by settling out of court all the election petition, a deal that none of the other government ministers knew about.
