On July 9, 1982: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a Winnipeg clairvoyant, Helen (Red) Davis, lost in court when a judge convicted her and her son of three zoning violations after they had added a third storey to their house; they were fined and ordered to comply with necessary alterations to the home in accordance with city bylaws. Canada’s unemployment rate hit 10.9 per cent, with 1.3 million people out of work. People in the grain trade were convinced the Canadian Wheat Board had made a $1-billion sale to the Soviet Union.
