Plan to ban plastics: The Liberal government will announce a plan to eliminate single-use plastics such as drinking straws. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will discuss the details in Montreal today. READ MORE

On June 10, 1960: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in Tokyo, roughly 5,000 protesters surrounded the vehicle of U.S. president Dwight Eisenhower’s press secretary for more than an hour; the president said this would not change his plans to visit Japan on June 19. In Canada, a CCF MP suggested that some immigration department officials might have taken part in the Chinese immigration racket that was under investigation by the RCMP. Meanwhile, a Progressive Conservative MP called for a complete overhaul of the country’s Immigration Act, saying it was surrounded by frustration, bewilderment and confusion and calling the current legislation “one of the saddest statues on the books.”
