Tankers targeted: The U.S. Navy is rushing to help amid heightened tensions between that country and Iran after two oil tankers were reportedly attacked in the Gulf of Oman. One, a Marshall Islands-flagged crude oil tanker, was described as “on fire and adrift.” READ MORE

On June 13, 1990: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Manitoba MLA Elijah Harper put a stop to prime minister Brian Mulroney’s proposed Meech Lake Accord with a simple “no”; speaking dissent in the face of the many “yea” votes meant the constitutional amendment would not have unanimous assent and its approval was in doubt. A Winnipeg man was fined $3,500 in provincial court after pleading guilty to having university degrees earned by a friend switched over to his name; the man would have been successful, court heard, had the original earner of those degrees not stumbled across the plot while registering for courses to further his own education.
