Plan passes hurdle: City council will vote next week on Mayor Brian Bowman’s plan to end firefighter union president Alex Forrest’s unusual and controversial salary arrangement. Report to be released: The U.S. Justice Department is scheduled to release a report by its internal watchdog today on the FBI’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. The report comes after an 18-month review, and President Donald Trump is expected to use it to validate his firing of FBI director James Comey last year.

In Ottawa, Jean Chrétien got last-minute support for his bid to lead the federal Liberal party, which cast some doubt on John Turner’s chances to take over from outgoing leader Pierre Trudeau. In the case of an op-ed column published in the Winnipeg Free Press, the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench ruled that the Human Rights Act, which prohibited newspapers from publishing discriminatory material, did not apply to editorial commentaries or articles.
