On June 14, 2000: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a man imprisoned in B.C. rejected accusations that he was responsible for the death of Manitoba woman Barbara Stoppel, and compared himself to Thomas Sophonow, who had been wrongfully accused. Contestants in TV show Pioneer Quest, being filmed in Manitoba, broke sod with a single-blade plough and faced swarms of mosquitoes; the contestants were spending a year building a homestead under 19th-century conditions for the History TV series.
