Dianne Grey-Wysocki’s 92-year-old mother, who lives in a personal-care home without fully functioning air conditioning, suffers both physically and emotionally. It came as a shock when she received a memo from Golden Links CEO Marcy-Lynn Larner explaining it was not possible to fix the cooling system or install a new one. Malak Abas has the story.

A unique proposal aims to create transitional homes in West Broadway for women fleeing domestic violence and help them pursue education. The University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corp. hopes to transform two lots to provide a 15-unit building for women and children who have experienced gender-based violence. To be eligible, the women involved must also be seeking ways to further their education. Joyanne Pursaga has the story.

Cormac McCarthy, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist who in prose both dense and brittle took readers from the southern Appalachians to the desert Southwest in such novels as “The Road,” “Blood Meridian” and “All the Pretty Horses,” died Tuesday. He was 89. The Associated Press reports.

On June 14, 1943: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in a 48-hour offensive, RAF and American heavy bombers dropped 5,250 tons of bombs on seven German industrial and U-boat targets, the heaviest aerial bombardment against Germany in the war so far. Allied bombardment hit Sicily, destroying 158 Italian aircraft; Linosa and Lampedusa fell, and Italian leader Benito Mussolini personally ordered the surrender of his fortress at Pantelleria. A newspaper report posited that these two offensives, following the Allies’ North African campaign, presaged a larger, full-scale Allied invasion. Read the rest of this day’s paper here.
