On June 2, 1939: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a gala send-off for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, who were touring Canada, would be held at Whittier Park in Winnipeg as the train carrying the royal couple departed. British prime minister Neville Chamberlain was said to be planning to send an envoy to Moscow to secure a mutual-aid pact between Britain, France and the Soviet Union. In Winnipeg, 0.43 inches of rain drenched the city.
