What’s happening today

Officers with body-worn cameras will be expected to turn them on during “any public encounter,” Brandon police say.

This will include calls for service, traffic stops and any interaction “where there could potentially be evidentiary value,” Insp. Jason Dupuis said on Monday.

Starting today, 12 Brandon Police Service members will be assigned their own body-worn camera. Dupuis said BPS will slowly roll out a total of around 65 cameras during the remainder of the year. The Brandon Sun‘s Skye Anderson reports.

Today’s must-read

The ratio of Winnipeg Police Service officers to the city’s population has increased for the first time in more than a decade.

In 2025, the so-called “cop-to-pop” ratio reached 166.8 officers per 100,000 people, up from 164.8 the previous year.

While that falls behind a national average of 180.3 per 100,000, it was the first local increase since 2013. Joyanne Pursaga has the story.

On the bright side

We can all agree that everything feels dire right now. The Earth is on fire. Warmongers are in charge. AI slop is replacing art. The second season of Heated Rivalry isn’t due until 2027.

So how do you find happiness? What combination of yoga, meditation, high protein, low stress, weight-bearing exercise, moisturizing and scented candles will be the magic bullet?

The answer is perhaps not so complicated: it’s the little things.

In this monthly feature, the Free Press collects some small actions that can have big results. Some of them will be hyper-specific — a song, a meme, a movie, a meal — while others are general nudges toward mindful behaviour that can bear rewards. Jill Wilson, Jen Zoratti and Ben Waldman have some suggestions here.

On this date

On June 2, 1937: The Winnipeg Free Press reported a highly-informed source said Italian warships were under orders to halt at sea Russian ships bearing supplies to the Madrid-Valencia government in Spain. Britain’s ambassador in Berlin pledged an ongoing commitment to peace with Germany. Initial results from the B.C. provincial election showed the Liberal government returning to power.
