On June 24, 1976: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a third of men serving weekend terms at Headingley jail were not showing up on any given weekend, leaving prison officials disgusted with the system. A senior Manitoba judge called on other provincial judges to stop handing out weekend sentences because they were impossible to administer. Most commercial airline flights remained grounded despite a nationally televised pitch by prime minister Pierre Trudeau for settlement of the dispute over the use of French in Quebec air communication.
