Tracking 53,000 drinkers: A groundbreaking Manitoba research study of heavy drinkers’ interactions with the health care, social service and justice systems will be released today. Over a 25-year period, researchers focused on the more than 53,000 Manitobans who were diagnosed with a physical disorder, such as liver damage, or a mental disorder, such as addiction, caused by high-risk alcohol use during this period. MMF vs. province: The Manitoba Metis Federation faces off in court today against the provincial government over orders Premier Brian Pallister gave Manitoba Hydro to kill a land-entitlement deal. Today’s hearing in Court of Queen’s Bench is an application by the MMF to seek a judicial review — it would be heard at a later date if the Métis are successful — that the federation hopes would eventually quash Pallister’s order to Hydro to cancel a $67.5-million deal with the MMF.

On June 25, 1965: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that 84 people were killed in a military jet transport that crashed in a mountainous region of California. In Saigon, Vietnam, at least 40 people were believed to have been killed in a blast thought to have been caused by three separate bombs that detonated in a restaurant. In Manitoba, school tax rebates were delayed, due to an unexpected heavy volume of claims, according to premier Duff Roblin.
