Free Press Head Start for June 25

Good morning.

Niigaan Sinclair says in his latest column that Canada Day must “be cancelled” in many circles this year in the wake of hundreds of unmarked graves being found near the sites of former residential schools.

The Montreal Canadiens are the first Canadian team to reach the Stanley Cup final since 2011. It seems beating the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL playoffs is good luck, because exactly two-thirds of the opponents that eliminated a Jets franchise have advanced to the final. The Edmonton Oilers reached the final six times while beating the original Jets team in the playoffs, and the Calgary Flames did so once. The Vegas Golden Knights and St. Louis Blues previously beat the current Jets franchise en route to the final before Montreal beat Winnipeg in the second round this year.

Video confirms a woman charged with fatally stabbing a 12-year-old boy went to the downtown police headquarters two days later of her own volition. Sources previously told the Free Press she might have tried to turn herself in before walking away.

In addition to COVID-19 patients being sent to other provinces, 59 patients have been transferred from Winnipeg to a community hospital elsewhere in Manitoba.
