Canadiens clinch: Artturi Lehkonen scored in overtime as the Canadiens eliminated the Golden Knights in Game 6 of their semifinal series in Montreal last night. The Habs are the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup, in 1993. Since then, five teams — the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators and the Canucks again — have lost in the Stanley Cup final. Tear gas fired at fans: Riot police fired tear gas multiple times as they tried to disperse revellers in downtown Montreal last night and early today after the Canadiens’ win. Fans who attended the game were temporarily forced to stay inside the Bell Centre because the streets in the nearby area had become raucous. The Canadian Press reports. READ MORE

On June 25, 1960: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Winnipeg ratepayers could see a tax rate boost of five mills or more in 1961 if plans before city council were carried through; spiralling wage costs were pointed to as the main cause for the proposed increase. In Quebec, provincial police guarded the legislative buildings as votes were counted, indicating a Liberal upset victory in the recent election, defeating the 16-year Union Nationale government. France’s Communist, Socialist and Catholic labour federations backed president Charles De Gaulle’s effort to end the Algerian war by negotiation with the rebels.
