The Colorado Avalanche won their third Stanley Cup in franchise history on Sunday night, and defenceman Cale Makar was named playoff MVP. The Tampa Bay Lightning were two wins short of becoming the NHL’s first three-peat champions since the New York Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cups in the early 1980s.

Summit continues: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed G7 leaders virtually. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with Zelenskyy on the first day of the summit in Germany to ask what he needs from the leaders. Trudeau was also set to meet with Indian PM Narendra Modi in a private meeting today. The Canadian Press reports. READ MORE

Epilepsy announcement: Health Minister Audrey Gordon, Health Sciences Centre COO Dr. Shawn Young and Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba CEO Stefano Grande will make an “epilepsy program” announcement this morning. READ MORE

Federal funds: Karina Gould — the federal minister of families, children and social development — will be at the University of Winnipeg to announce funding “to support the improvement of early learning and child care service delivery.”

Due in Russian court: Brittney Griner is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing in Russia. The WNBA star was arrested at a Moscow airport for cannabis possession more than four months ago. READ MORE

On June 27, 1927: The Manitoba Free Press reported accidents claimed two young lives over the weekend: Eric Gislason, 2, died when he was hit by a heavy truck, and Joseph Naynon, 13, drowned while swimming in the Red River. Candidates made their last pitch to voters before the June 28 provincial election, and the Free Press, along with the Winnipeg Tribune and the government, set up a special phone line for readers to get election results; the Free Press said its phones had been inundated on election nights in the past.
