Tumult in Tuxedo: A controversial proposal by an Old Tuxedo homeowner to subdivide their lot has been nixed after neighbours convinced council’s appeal committee it was a bad idea. The homeowner on Handsart Avenue had asked the city for permission to split their 153-foot-wide lot in two, keeping the existing single-family home on one lot and building a second single-family home on the second lot. Robots at the ready: Three robots — Baxter, Sawyer and UR10 — will cut the ribbon at the new Smart Factory at Red River College at 9:30 a.m. today. Key technologies at the $10-million facility will include metals additive manufacturing, collaborative robotics, high-speed 3D laser metrology, industrial manufacturing automation and industrial networking.

Remembering Jimboy: Imelda and Jaime Adao Sr. will accept the honorary college diploma from the Booth University College faculty of Business and Administrative Studies in memory of their son, Jamie “Jimboy” Adao. He was killed while protecting his grandmother in a home invasion on March 3, 2019. Ashley Prest tells us what to expect. READ MORE

Chinatown Street Festival: The multicultural fun begins at 6:30 p.m. today for the 11th annual Chinatown street festival near the intersection of King Street and James Avenue. This evening, and Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m., the festival features martial arts, folk dancers and music. It’s all free.

On June 28, 2001: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Winnipeg Police Service gang unit was investigating the wounding of an Elmwood man, the city’s third shooting in six days. Two young Winnipeggers died when the motorcycle they were riding on slammed into a car at a downtown intersection; the incident renewed calls by police for photo radar and red-light cameras.
