On June 4, 1949: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in Ottawa, the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada suspended the Canadian Seaman’s Union; after five days of closed meetings a committee found the union had violated the TLC’s constitution and failed to accept its responsibilities as an affiliate. Manitoba MLA G.L. Thorvaldson, whose charges in the legislature prompted a commission inquiring into police methods, faced cross-examination by counsel representing police at the inquiry. Winnipeggers prepared to celebrate the city’s 75th anniversary.
