On June 7, 1944: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Allied forces had cleared Germans from all their beachheads in France after the D-Day invasion, and were battering their way inland against stiff resistance and counterattacks from German forces. An eyewitness told how the first assault forces on the beachhead had been cut down by German crossfire, but that succeeding waves of Allied troops climbed over the bodies of their comrades to continue the attack. The weather, which had caused a one-day delay in the D-Day operation, was still a concern for the Allied supreme command. READ MORE
