Caps win Cup: The Washington Capitals have won the first Stanley Cup in the team’s 43-year history, beating the Golden Knights in Las Vegas last night. Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin won the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP as the Caps beat the expansion Knights in five games. READ MORE

Cannabis bill OK’d: The Senate voted to approve the bill to legalize cannabis last night, with four dozen amendments. The bill will return to the House of Commons for a final vote, with the Liberal government likely keeping some of the amendments and rejecting others, before legislation takes effect in August or September. Rail yard renovation: Canadian National Railway will invest $130 million in Manitoba in 2018, the company announced Friday morning. The expansion of CN’s Symington Yard in Winnipeg will see a dozen new and extended tracks constructed.

On June 8, 1944: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Allied forces were pushing further inland in France, capturing Bayeux and Caen, while German forces were scrambling to react to the massive D-Day invasion of June 6. Canadian forces’ participation in the assault, including the Royal Canadian navy, was noted, but the involvement of Canadian soldiers was as yet cloaked in secrecy, as American commander Dwight Eisenhower aimed to keep details of further invasion plans from the Germans.
