On March 1, 1972: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a $20-million development was planned for the site of the Glendale Country Club in St. James-Assiniboia, along Portage Avenue; the initial stage called for a $6-million shopping mall anchored by two major department stores. Manitoba premier Ed Schreyer resumed his attacks on the Winnipeg Free Press, criticizing the newspaper for an editorial he called “scandalous in its inaccuracies” and “irresponsible in the extreme.” In Toronto, prime minister Pierre Trudeau apologized to a housewife for using bad language in the House of Commons, as he responded to calls to an open-line radio show on CHUM.
