Canadians in quarantine: A chartered flight carrying Canadians who were aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship arrived at an air force base in Ontario this morning, where the passengers will be quarantined. At least 21 people on the ship were diagnosed with COVID-19. SUPPLIED PHOTOIn the early morning hours of October 2, 2003, Nicolle Hands, 32, was fatally injured in her apartment on Mountain Avenue in Winnipeg while her three children and a babysitter slept in the next room. Nicolle was rushed to hospital where she died three days later.
‘I’m devastated’: A suspect arrested in the 2003 killing of Nicolle Hands was released without being charged. “I waited 16 years to hear someone say, ‘Yup, we got the guy — he’s in jail.’ Then I get another call: ‘We had to let him go,’” the victim’s mother, Eleanor Hands, said. The case is one of at least four in the past three years where Manitoba RCMP released a suspect shortly after announcing an arrest. Carol Sanders reports. READ MORE

On March 10, 1989: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that anti-abortion activist Joe Borowski called for a national campaign of civil disobedience following the Supreme Court of Canada’s refusal to rule on the rights of the unborn; the federal justice minister said the government would not be moving quickly to bring in a new abortion law after the previous one was struck down by the court. In Ottawa, the federal finance minister said the government would backtrack on billions of dollars in pre-election spending promises if that was what it took to get the deficit under control.
