On March 12, 1974: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the price of gasoline fell to $1.20 a gallon; it had been $1.63 a gallon in February. Northern affairs minister Ron McBryde defended Manitoba’s winter roads program, saying it was no great catastrophe that routes to Little Grand Rapids and Red Sucker Lake would not be open that year. Search and rescue officials released aerial photos of a plane that had gone down in Manitoba, killing all aboard. The United Kingdom’s Labour government pledged to seek a fundamental renegotiation of the terms of Britain’s entry into the European Common Market and put the results to the British people.
