On March 25, 1954: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a 64-year-old man had been arrested by city police and charged with murder in the deaths of his wife and stepson. In Brandon, carbon monoxide poisoning killed two people and put a third person in hospital in serious condition; the family had been living in a closed-in basement room, and fumes from the coal and wood-burning range in the unit overcame them. In Winnipeg, work on more than $88 million worth of realty projects were in planning stages or already underway.
