Stump speech: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke to about 50 Liberal donors at an event at The Forks last night. In his latest column, Dan Lett says allowing journalists to attend the 10-minute speech was a shameless attempt to show Trudeau is still loved by party members.

Court pick quashed: Sources told The Canadian Press former attorney general Judy Wilson-Raybould’s choice of a Manitoba judge, Glenn Joyal, to become chief justice of the Supreme Court led to friction with Trudeau. “I fear that someone is using my previous candidacy to the Supreme Court of Canada to further an agenda unrelated to the appointment process,” Joyal said in a statement. “This is wrong.”

Nearing veto victory: The House of Representatives will vote on overriding U.S. President Donald Trump’s first veto, but the resolution is expected to fall well short of the two-thirds majorities needed. If that happens, Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the Mexican border will stand.

McGregor taps out: Conor McGregor, the Dublin native who became a UFC champion and the biggest star in mixed martial arts, announced his retirement on Twitter. McGregor, 30, hasn’t won a fight since November 2016.
