The Kinew government opened the spring sitting of the Manitoba legislature Wednesday with a bill to repeal a ban on project labour agreements championed by the Progressive Conservatives.
Labour Minister Malaya Marcelino said Bill 7 will give public-sector entities the option to require contractors bidding on infrastructure projects to employ a unionized workforce.
It will also allow them to use project labour agreements, which could require contractors to pay prevailing wages under a collective agreement or for non-unionized workers to become union members or pay dues as a condition of obtaining work. Danielle Da Silva has the story.

On the bright side
When she went back to school after her husband’s death, Hamdi Warsame felt a bit embarrassed to be an adult student. Now she’s being honoured by the province for her work in the classroom.
The 47-year-old, who immigrated to Canada in 1993 before settling in Winnipeg with her children several years ago, is in her third year of studies at Literacyworks, an adult education organization. Read the full story here.
