Lane says sorry: After being asked repeatedly by media in the past week for his reaction to an arbitrator’s ruling March 1 that his actions created a disrespectful workplace environment, Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service Chief John Lane apologized on Thursday. “Really now, it’s a matter of moving forward,” he said. Perfect harmony: Two Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra violinists, Karl Stobbe and Gwen Hoebig, have sat beside each other onstage for more than two decades, and they are also friends outside of the theatre. Family reunited: It was a heartwarming reunion on Thursday when a Congolese teenager was reunited with her family. The girl went missing as a toddler 14 years ago when their village was attacked and the family’s house was set on fire, and the family had presumed the toddler was dead. We’re in the money: A Winnipeg landmark, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, is pictured on the back of the new Canadian $10 banknote, the first-ever museum to be pictured on a Canadian banknote. The front of the bill, which was unveiled Thursday, features a picture of Viola Desmond, a Halifax businesswoman who famously refused to give up her seat in a whites-only section of a movie theatre in New Glasgow, N.S., and was forcibly removed and jailed overnight. On March 9, 1945: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that U.S. 1st Army tanks and troops swept across the Ludendorf bridge and pushed five miles into German territory. The chief of staff of the German army admitted to troops in a radio address that the strain on their forces was becoming intolerable. Canadians rallied to donate to the Red Cross.
