More fires Monday: Firefighters battled three residential fires Monday night, on Flora and Alfred avenues in the North End and on Lipton Street in the West End. On May 12, 2000: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the city of Selkirk was shocked when a 72-year-old woman was shot dead in her truck by an 80-year-old ex-companion who fired from his sixth-floor balcony with a high-powered rifle; the man then fatally shot himself. CBC Manitoba stood to lose 53 out of 126 television jobs under a dramatic budget-saving reorganization. Faculties and departments at the University of Manitoba expected to to make deep budget cuts as a result of the provincial budget.
