On May 12, 1960: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that South Africa’s 10 Commonwealth partners, including Canada, were preparing a public repudiation of the country’s apartheid regime after informal talks failed to move the South African government to change its policies. A Winnipeg alderman said the fire chief and other aldermen pushing for stricter regulation of rooming houses in the wake of two fires that caused five deaths didn’t know what they were talking about and that current legislation allowed for increased inspection.
