Day school settlement: Hearings on the federal government’s proposed settlement with former students who attended “Indian day schools” begin this morning in Winnipeg. The students were not included in a 2006 settlement with residential school students.
Study on seniors: The University of Manitoba will release a study on the health of seniors who live in private homes or retirement residences. The U of M says the study will help health-care planners prepare meet the needs of seniors who don’t live in personal care homes.
Actress to plead guilty: In Boston, Felicity Huffman is scheduled to plead guilty as part of a case against wealthy parents accused of paying bribes to help their children get into elite universities across the U.S. READ MORE

On May 13, 1919: The Manitoba Free Press reported that Winnipeg mayor Charles Gray and Manitoba premier Tobias Norris met with employers and representatives of employees for four hours in a conference in the Builders’ Exchange, with the hope of averting an industrial tie-up owing to the strike in the building and metal trades. In Ottawa, the “soldier settlement” bill was introduced, which expanded on earlier 1917 legislation to encourage soldiers returning from the Great War to settle land and take up farming.
