On May 16, 1972: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Alabama governor George Wallace was critically injured by a bullet from a would-be assassin who shot him at a Maryland shopping centre. Wallace had been favoured to win primaries in Maryland and Michigan in the U.S. presidential race. John Connally resigned from the cabinet of U.S. president Richard Nixon and was replaced by George Shultz. In Quebec, labour unrest continued, but the mood in Montreal was mixed. READ MORE
