Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were detained in December after Meng Wanzhou, an executive with telecoms giant Huawei, was arrested in Vancouver at the request of U.S. authorities. READ MORE

On May 16, 1939: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Quebec “thrilled with expectation” as the ship bearing King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, along with a contingent of British and Canadian navy vessels, approached as part of the royals’ visit. Meanwhile in Winnipeg, Portage Avenue and Main Street were adorned with red, white and blue banners so that the city would look its best for the visit of the king and queen.
