On May 19, 1938: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that William McQuarrie was found guilty in the murder of his wife and was sentenced to be hanged; his only request was that his children be placed in a Catholic home. In China, the Japanese reported they had occupied all of the strategic city of Suchow. A rift between France and Italy jeopardized Great Britain’s policy of European settlement.
