On May 2, 1958: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Manitoba Conservative leader Duff Roblin and premier D.L. Campbell each kicked off their campaigns in the upcoming provincial election. Railway unions affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress were not expected to join the strike by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, but railway operations might nonetheless be brought to a halt by the railway workers’ refusal to cross the firemen’s picket lines.
