Free Press Head Start for May 20

Good morning.

People stood in the rain on Thursday evening at a vigil for Rebecca Contois, the victim of Winnipeg’s latest homicide. The Free Press reports on how police believe there could be more victims linked to the man charged.

Dr. Theresa Tam, the federal government’s chief public health officer, will face questions about monkeypox at a news conference later this morning. Two cases have been confirmed in Quebec. (There should be a rule where we only have to worry about one plague at a time.)

The May long weekend is here. For once, there’s no rain expected, although there is a low chance of rain Saturday. Regardless, the already wet conditions will discourage some people from camping. The Free Press will not publish a print edition on Victoria Day but will post an electronic edition.

Amelia Earhart took off from Newfoundland 90 years ago today and became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
