Taliban fighter being freed: John Walker Lindh, dubbed the “American Taliban” after his capture in Afghanistan in 2001, is set to be released from a federal prison in Indiana after more than 17 years behind bars. A judge has imposed restrictions on his supervised release for the next three years.

On May 23, 1979: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Joe Clark’s Progressive Conservatives narrowly defeated Pierre Trudeau’s Liberals in the federal election, and would form a minority government; it would be the first Tory government at that level in 16 years, and Clark would become the first western-born prime minister since Confederation. Manitoba bucked the trend, sending four incumbent PC candidates down to defeat; the NDP took three of those seats and the Liberals one. READ MORE
