On May 26, 1961: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Manitoba government imposed travel restrictions on forested areas due to the elevated risk of forest fires. In Winnipeg, 10 people were injured in an explosion that destroyed the Prague Café on Main Street; natural gas was not thought to be the cause. In Washington, D.C., Congress sensed in U.S. president John F. Kennedy’s speech an appeal that seemed designed to take the country to the edge of wartime emergency with the Soviet Union. In Jackson, Miss., 27 “freedom riders” were set to go on trial as integrationists continued their push against segregationist Jim Crow laws throughout the deep South.
