Federal funds: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce new funding for First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities today, some of which is intended to help them cope with the pandemic. READ MORE

Care home visits: All personal care homes should be ready to allow outdoor visits between residents and their loved ones. The province announced last week care homes were expected to have plans in place for such visits by today.

Some Bombers back at practice: The Blue Bombers will reopen their facility today as they allow their eight locally based players to practise at scheduled intervals. Only two players will be allowed in the stadium at one time.

Back to making movies: Movie and TV productions in Manitoba will face new safety protocols, including periods of quarantine for out-of-province talent, when they’re allowed to restart June 1. Randall King reports. READ MORE

Mayhem in Minneapolis: Police arrested CNN reporter Omar Jimenez, who is black, and his colleagues this morning as he reported live on the violent protests that have rocked Minneapolis since a black man was killed by a white police officer. Earlier, cheering protesters torched a police station that had been evacuated. READ MORE

Trump’s tweet: Twitter added a warning about “glorifying violence” to a tweet by U.S. President Donald Trump Thursday night about the protests in Minneapolis, saying it violated the platform’s rules about “glorifying violence.” His tweeted ended with, “Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!” The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

Seven shot during protests: At least seven people were shot in Louisville, Ky., as protesters demanded justice for Breonna Taylor, a black woman shot and killed by police in her home earlier this year. No officers fired their weapons during the protests, a police spokesman told The Associated Press. READ MORE

On May 29, 1991: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that more than two-thirds of Manitoba’s court reporters faced layoffs or huge pay cuts by the end of the year, as part of a move toward automated court monitors. Police and provincial officials investigated allegations that two former staff members at a residential youth treatment centre sexually abused troubled teenagers, and at least two of the teens were forced into prostitution. Winnipeg city councillors warned that the rich and powerful would run Winnipeg if the number of wards and thus councillors were reduced from 29 to 15.
