MMF building homes: A new 55-plus apartment complex in Selkirk is being built by the Manitoba Métis Federation, to open in 2024. The MMF has built single-family homes as well as duplexes and triplexes, but this 49-unit building is a new undertaking for the group. War in Ukraine: Russian troops have entered the eastern Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk. The city’s mayor says since their arrival, power and communications have been cut and “the city has been completely ruined.” The Associated Press reports. READ MORE
Firearm restrictions: New federal legislation to be tabled this afternoon is expected to include new measures to curb handguns, including some proposals that did not pass before last year’s federal election, including a mandatory buyback of assault-style firearms, a crackdown on high-capacity firearm magazines and efforts to combat gun smuggling. Rainy record: Unusually high levels of precipitation, both snow and rain, have pushed this spring closer to the record books. Following this past weekend, it’s now the second-wettest meteorological spring (March 1 to May 31) since records began in 1872. That has led to flooding in many communities. Chris Kitching reports.
