Good morning!

A fire on Westminster Avenue early this morning resulted in the closure of the street between Sherbrook and Langside streets.

Indigenous teens and young adults who have lost interest in academics in recent years for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to COVID-19 closures, are being welcomed back into the public school system at Niiwin Minisiwiwag, a new “off-campus” in the North End. Maggie Macintosh has the story.

The Winnipeg Humane Society is seeking to amp up its lobbying efforts by investing in its first full-time animal rights lawyer. Malak Abas reports.

The RCMP is reminding people to always use seatbelts when in a vehicle, in the wake of recent fatalities. “Almost all rollover crashes are survivable if you’re buckled up,” says RCMP Sgt. Mark Hume. “The risk of dying or being seriously injured without a seatbelt is very high.” Tessa Adamski has the story.

On May 31, 1940: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that half the British Expeditionary Force, along with Belgian and French troops, hadsafely landed in England following their evacuation from Dunkirk, while a new rescue armada of ships sailed into Dunkirk harbour and embarked additional thousands of trapped British and French troops. Two French divisions of the rearguard for the Allied retreat from Flanders reached Dunkirk. A young Winnipeg woman, who had been studying in France but spent many days assisting Dutch, Belgian and French refugees, was able to escape the advancing German attacks, along with many others, to safety in England.
