On May 4, 1959: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the parliamentary assistant to the trade minister said RCMP had uncovered a number of Communist agents in the federal civil service in Ottawa; the RCMP had been screening 30,000 civil servants over the previous year. In China, the Shanghai garrison command admitted the Nationalist escape port of Hangchow had been captured by Communist troops, cutting off the garrison. A federal increase to old age pensions that needed to be ratified provincially was en route to the Manitoba legislature. READ MORE
