On May 5, 1930: The Manitoba Free Press reported that a trio of armed robbers struck the Lyceum Theatre in Winnipeg over the weekend, binding and gagging the assistant manager and cashier, and making off with $971. In other local news, two juveniles with revolvers held up a store on Grove Street and Euclid Avenue, stealing $500; police arrested one suspect in the case. In Jalalpur, India, Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the civil disobedience movement against British rule in the country, was suddenly arrested and taken to the central jail in Yerwada, where he would be detained without trial.
