Good morning!

Your forecast: There’s finally light at the end of the tunnel. According to Environment Canada, we’re going to experience some weather over the next week or so that bears a strong resemblance to spring, unlike the blizzard-like conditions parts of southern Manitoba received on Sunday. Today, expect a mix of sun and cloud, light snow in the morning and a daytime high of 0 C, while the overnight low is -11 C. We could get showers Tuesday and a high of 6 C, but look out for a splendid Wednesday that features plenty of sunshine and a high of 14 C. Clouds roll in Thursday and we could get rain into the weekend, but temperatures will hover on the plus side in the mid-teens. And there’s a chance Sunday could be sunny and 17 C.

Mulcair will never be PM: Thomas Mulcair, the leader of the NDP, who snatched defeat from the jaws of potential victory in last fall’s federal election, was unceremoniously dumped at the party’s annual convention on Sunday in Edmonton. He received the support of just 48 per cent of delegates in a leadership review, below the 50 per cent required to be able to legally remain at the helm. He will remain as leader until a successor is chosen at some point during the next two years. READ MORE

Who can you trust?: Brian Pallister may be on the cusp of becoming Manitoba’s next premier but he’s hardly generating the kind of excitement he’d be hoping for in the election campaign’s final days. The Progressive Conservatives are on track to win a majority government, but according to a Winnipeg Free Press-CTV poll, many Manitobans don’t trust him. The telephone poll of 1,000 adults in the province found just 33 per cent of respondents trusted the PC leader. NDP leader Greg Selinger has the trust of just 22 per cent, while Liberal leader Rana Bokhara is trusted by just 12 per cent. Manitobans vote on April 19th. READ MORE

Jets make late arrival: The Winnipeg Jets won their fourth straight game — a season high — on Saturday night, a 4-3 overtime decision over the Los Angeles Kings. The NHL club was 6-2-2 in its last 10 games of the season. Incredibly, Winnipeg overcame a 3-0 deficit, showing the kind of tenacity and spunk that will invariably be on display when the Stanley Cup playoffs begin in a few days — without the Jets. If only they could have put together this kind of streak, say two months ago, then maybe we’d be talking about a second-straight playoff appearance. They finished the season with a record of 35-39-8, good for 78 points and last in the Central Division. Overall, the Jets finished in sixth-last place in the league, which, according to the NHL’s draft lottery system, gives them a 7.5 per cent chance of landing the first overall selection in the June entry draft. Masters meltdown: If it makes Jordan Spieth feel any better, millions of golfers around the world empathize with him right now. The winner of the 2015 Masters was just nine holes away from winning the world’s most prestigious golf tournament for the second consecutive year when he did something every weekend warrior is all too familiar with — he blew up. On the always-dangerous par-3 12th hole, he pushed a couple of shots into the water and then had to get up and down from a bunker to post a quadruple-bogey 7. Spieth was five shots ahead on the 10th tee and three shots behind when he walked to the 13th tee. He never recovered. Oh yeah, England’s Danny Willett came out of nowhere with a round of five-under par 67 on Sunday to beat Spieth and Lee Westwood by three strokes for his first Masters victory. READ MORE

Iconic city restaurant is closing down: The Round Table, a Pembina Highway institution for more than four decades, will shut down on May 14. Owner Kristjan Kristjansson plans to open up a new craft beer-related concept in the same 8,000-square-foot space in the summer. He said he has been researching a concept change for a number of years and solicited research from as far away as California to help him come up with the ideal approach. The restaurant business has changed substantially since the Round Table opened in 1973. Kristjansson said the breakdown between local and national players was 30 per cent to 70 per cent. Today, it’s the opposite. READ MORE

Breakfast with Selinger: The state may have no place in the bedrooms of the nation but that’s apparently not true for kitchens. NDP leader Greg Selinger invited the media into the breakfast nook of his St. Boniface home on Sunday where he unveiled his 2014 tax return. (He made $147,347 during the year, by the way). “I do not have any off-shore accounts — no secret accounts anywhere,” he said. Liberal leader Rana Bokhari quickly followed suit later in the day, producing documents showing she earned $37,670 in 2013. Both leaders called for PC chief Brian Pallister to do the same but he rebuffed the request, calling it an “election stunt” and “American-style politics.” READ MORE

Bryan Adams: This one is starting to pick up steam across the U.S. and Canada. Canadian rocker Bryan Adams has cancelled a show in Mississippi this week because he’s opposed to the state’s new law that allows religious and some private businesses to refuse service to gay couples. The singer said he can’t “in good conscience” perform in a state where “certain people are being denied their civil rights due to their sexual orientation.”

#NationalSiblingDay: Hundreds of thousands of people used the hashtag to spread the word about Sunday, a day to honour your sibling. Whether it was the little brother who used to make inappropriate armpit sounds when you had a friend over, or that big sister you travelled to France with, they all got some love.

On April 11, 1977: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Manitobans enjoyed warm temperatures in the high teens and low 20s over the weekend. Bush fires in Manitoba’s Interlake region were under control after a weekend tough firefighting. France sent cargo ships to transport supplies for Moroccan troops fighting in support of Zaire’s government against invaders in the southern part of the country. The U.S. seized two Russian ships for apparently violating the 200-mile fishing limit.
