Lawsuit just before election: We start the week with news that NDP Leader Greg Selinger, infrastructure and transportation minister Steve Ashton and the Manitoba government are being sued by Omnitrax Canada. The company has accused them of breaching a non-disclosure agreement in relation to the proposed deal to sell Hudson Bay Railway and Port of Churchill to a group of First Nations. A government spokesman says the government intends to deny the allegations. READ MORE
Your forecast: Environment Canada is finally offering up a forecast with some actual spring weather. The clouds will roll away late this morning, giving way to a sunny day with a high temperature of 16 C. On Tuesday, expect sunshine with a high of 17, while Wednesday features a bright blue sky and a high of 20 C. Thursday and Friday will be cooler, with daytime highs of only 8 C, but we return to the low- to mid-teens for the weekend.

Missing teen’s body found: Ontario Provincial Police confirmed Sunday night that the body of missing teen Azraya Kokopenace was found near the location of where she was last seen Friday. Police said in a media statement that Azraya, 14, was found deceased at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday by members of the Bear Clan, who were assisting in the search for the girl. Foul play is not suspected. Things get nasty: The Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats exchanged attacks Sunday on the second-last day of the provincial election campaign. NDP candidate Dave Chomiak demanded Tory Leader Brian Pallister disclose the truth about his holdings in Costa Rica before Tuesday’s election. After the PCs dismissed Chomiak’s demand as “trying to save his own seat,” Conservative candidate Cameron Friesen accused the NDP of having no plan to pay for its promises, adding the Manitoba sales tax could rise to as high as 10 per cent under NDP rule. Facebook page investigated: Brandon police are investigating a Facebook page targeting the local immigrant community. The page, which included derogatory posts and a profile picture with the words “I Hate Immigrants,” was removed from Facebook on Saturday. Brandon resident Rhonda McCorriston reported the page to Facebook when it was still active. “I was really offended… as far as I’m concerned, it is spreading hate,” she said. READ MORE

Giesbrecht trial begins: The criminal trial of a Winnipeg woman charged with concealing the remains of six infants in a storage locker begins today before a judge only. Andrea Giesbrecht was arrested in October 2014 shortly after the remains were discovered, but she has been on bail for a year. Her lawyer, Greg Brodsky, says the trial likely to hinge on whether the babies were born alive. Despite numerous pre-trial hearings, the ages of the infants or a reason for why they were put in the storage locker has never been revealed. READ MORE

New ‘Chief’ in Point Douglas: NDP candidate Kevin Chief and his wife, Melanie, welcomed their third child on Sunday. In a tweet, Chief, who has served as the MLA for Point Douglas since 2011, announced the arrival of baby Dax, at eight pounds and five ounces. The couple already has two sons, Hayden and Kellan. Sweet justice on Law Day: Students from grades 3 and 4 at Frontenac School in Winnipeg took part in mock trials on Sunday afternoon during Law Day, a cross-country event celebrating its 24th anniversary and the 34th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, hosted by The Manitoba Bar Association. One youngster was on trial for eating a witch’s gingerbread but beat the rap. READ MORE
Pistons stave off elimination: The Steinbach Pistons live to fight another day. Down 3-0 in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League best-of-seven championship series, the host Pistons beat the Portage Terriers 6-2 on Sunday night to stay alive. AC/DC lead guitarist Angus Young also made a surprise appearance playing with GNR for renditions of AC/DC’s “Whole Lotta Rosie” and “Riff Raff.”
