Good morning!

Silver lining: We begin the day with a bit of news from the Roaring Game that might have been inadvertently swept away by a very busy weekend in sports. A quarter of curlers did Manitoba proud by winning a silver medal at the world senior men’s curling championship in Karlstad, Sweden. Randy Neufeld and his team of third Dean Moxham, second Peter Nicholls and lead Dale Michie, representing the La Salle club, fell 7-4 in the final to Sweden’s Mats Wrana. It was the Canadian team’s only defeat at the competition after going 8-0 in the round-robin and then posting a pair of playoff wins to reach the final Saturday.

Your forecast: Let’s steal a line from the fake documentary “Spinal Tap” to describe the weather the next few days. “This one goes to 11.” Not only is today’s temperature headed for a high of 11 C under a mostly sunny sky, so, too, are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, according to Environment Canada. Meanwhile, Thursday’s high is 9 C, while Saturday and Sunday are looking mighty sweet at 17 C and 16 C, respectively. But hey, enough of our yakkin’. What do you say, let’s boogie! (You really should see that movie.)

Firebug weekend: The Winnipeg police arson unit was busy this weekend investigating fires in the Wolseley area Saturday sent six people to hospital and caused more than $4 million in damage, including the destruction of a condominium under construction. On Sunday, the arson unit was called out again after two fires were set – and quickly extinguished – in a housing project under construction in St. James. A suspect was arrested but police wouldn’t say if they think the weekend fires were connected in any way. READ MORE

High water warning: With recent rainfall and spring runoff raising water levels, the Hydrologic Forecast Centre of Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation issued a high water advisory for Whiteshell lakes on the weekend. Businesses at Falcon Lake said Sunday that people have been phoning since the advisory was issued to ask if their cottages are affected. They’ve been buoyed by the hope that a week of sunny, dry weather ahead will ease concerns about high water on Falcon and West Hawk lakes where several cottages are potentially in danger.

Call to reopen peacekeeper school: If Canada wants to revive its role as a peacekeeper in the world, it should reopen the Pearson Centre shuttered by the previous government in 2013, says the Canadian non-governmental organization Canadem. For Canada to get back to being the world’s peacekeeper, it needs to get back to school, says the NGO that has established a reputation for staffing United Nations missions with civilian experts in security reform, election monitoring and building democratic institutions. On April 25, 2007: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a new mural in the West End commemorated the migration of Mennonites to Manitoba in the 1870s; about 7,000 came to Winnipeg in the first wave, when the city had a population of 5,000 people.
