Tax credit in crosshairs: The $700 homeowners education property tax credit is under review by the provincial government. Senior staff acknowledged last week the Progressive Conservatives set a precedent in the spring budget for imposing income-testing on the seniors school property tax rebate and capping benefits. Now they’re not ruling out that they could potentially do something similar with the education property tax credit for homeowners, which cost the province $201.2 million last year. READ MORE

Improved mental health: More than 150 Winnipeggers gathered Sunday in a show of support and a call to action on mental health in Manitoba. Organized by Bonnie Bricker, who lost her son Reid Bricker to suicide last year, and Naomi Sommer, who guided her son through depression, the event at the Legislative Building called for such initiatives as the establishment of a peer support system that would bring those recovering from mental health problems into contact with people who are beginning to access care. Newcomers attacked: Newcomers to Canada taking orientation classes downtown have been attacked in broad daylight by an armed robber. Winnipeg police have a suspect in custody after a man and a woman were slashed by a knife-wielding robber outside the Entry Program in the 300 block of Portage Avenue on Thursday. The married couple — he is 38, and she is 34 — are both students at the Entry Program, a four-week course in survival for immigrants and refugees who have recently arrived in Canada. READ MORE

Laid to rest: At the Headingley Gaol Cemetery, it’s a struggle to feel the sympathy and respect one usually has at a burial ground, Bill Redekop writes.
