Good morning!

Your forecast: Judging by this week’s forecast, we’re going to need all the warmth from the holiday season we can get. Today won’t be so bad. We’re looking at a cloudy day, with a 30 per cent chance of flurries in the afternoon a south breeze at 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h and a high of -9 C. And it actually warms up Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with daytime temperatures in the minus single digits. But Environment Canada is calling for a very cold Christmas Eve, with an overnight low of -19 C, a high of just -15 C on Christmas Day and a daytime high of -14 C on Boxing Day.

Can you say awkward: Miss Universe 2015 host Steve Harvey, a comedian and game show host, has apologized after his massive mistake at Sunday night’s pageant in Las Vegas. With just two contestants left, Harvey read a card wrong and incorrectly announced that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo won the crown. In fact, he was supposed to say she was the first runner-up, and that Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, had won. After he apologized, Wurtzbach walked to the front of the stage and stood beside Arevalo, who was already wearing the crown. READ MORE

On Dec. 21, 1887: The Manitoba Daily Free Press reported that Canadian Pacific Railway vice-president Van Horne was questioned at length by the railway commission regarding rates, and he declared a fixed tariff impractical. “That portion of his evidence which will undoubtedly be of the most interest to the people of Manitoba,” the paper reported, “was in regard to railway legislation, about which Van Horne should have learned a little during the course of the past summer. He seems at any rate to have profited by his experience.” Van Horne went on to say that the notion of existing railways being protected by legislation against the building of new ones was “an Old World fallacy.” The Free Press reported: “Yes, Mr. Van Horne actually said this. But then, evidently thinking he had put his foot in it he added, ‘I may appear to be inconsistent in advocating freedom in railway building while the C.P.R. is enjoying certain protection in the Northwest…'”
