Good morning!

Your forecast: Those cold but clear and sunny winter days are upon us. A stinging overnight wind chill lingers this morning at -29, while the actual temperature should climb to just -15 C by mid-afternoon. Expect daytime temperatures around -15 C on Tuesday and Wednesday, under sunny skies. By Thursday, things begin to warm up. We’re looking at a daytime high of -10 C Thursday and a low of -15 C on New Year’s Eve. But we’ll ring in the new year with above-normal temperatures – daytime highs of -7 C and -5 C on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Family grieving again: A Manitoba family that has endured the deaths of six loves ones from asbestos-related lung diseases is once again in mourning. Raven ThunderSky, who had spearheaded the charge against the federal government over its use of faulty asbestos-laced insulation, died in Winnipeg on Christmas Eve after being bed-ridden for the last two months of her life. She is the seventh family member to fall victim to an upbringing that was surrounded by asbestos in Poplar River First Nation and nearby Berens River. READ MORE

MMIW database: A digital database of missing and murdered indigenous women, created by researchers at the University of Manitoba, is in the early stages of development. A digital space with more than just names, the database will tell victims’ stories the way their families want them to be told, study how missing or murdered aboriginal women are represented in traditional media and represent the victims as complex, multi-faceted people. Deadly weather: At least 11 people died and dozens were injured in strong tornadoes that hammered the Dallas area and caused substantial damage over the weekend, while another 13 people died in flooding in the midwest United States. The powerful weather events – floods, blizzards, tornadoes — have accounted for 43 deaths overall in the last week in Texas, Illinois, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas. READ MORE

Coming to Canada: Relatives of a Syrian boy whose lifeless body was photographed on a Turkish beach are expected to land in Vancouver this morning to begin a new life. The uncle, aunt and five cousins of three-year-old Alan Kurdi will land in Canada as refugees, sponsored by the man’s sister. Little Alan drowned along with his five-year-old brother and their mother while crossing the waters between Turkey and Greece in September. The boy’s aunt, Tima Kurdi, is opening a hair salon in Port Coquitlam, B.C., where she will work alongside her husband, Mohammed, who ran a barbershop in Syria.

Lights, lights, action: There’s still a couple more days to take in the spectacular light show at the Canad Inns Winter Wonderland. The drive-thru light show, featuring a million lights in 26 different theme areas, is on at Red River Exhibition Park, 3977 Portage Ave., until Saturday, Jan. 2.

Kane being investigated: The Buffalo News is reporting that former Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane is the subject of a sex assault investigation. The incident being probed allegedly occurred at a downtown hotel near Buffalo’s First Niagara Center on Sunday morning. No charges have been filed against Kane, now a member of the Buffalo Sabres, who was absent from a team practice on Sunday for “personal reasons.” Kane has reportedly not been charged and an investigation is ongoing. Condo rental scam: At a time when they should be celebrating the holidays, Crystal and Daimon Freeman are scrambling to find a place to live after being fleeced for $1,300 in a condo-rental scam. The couple, parents to son Keagin, 7, and daughter, Leah, four months, had scraped together a $1,300 deposit for a condo in Bridgwater Forest and were expecting to have the keys and lease agreement arrive by UPS Dec. 22. All they got was an email demanding more money. READ MORE

Jets win by a Little: It’s the most exciting play in hockey – and Winnipeg centre Bryan Little didn’t waste the opportunity. A penalty shot by Little was the game-winning goal and goalie Connor Hellebuyck recorded his first NHL shutout as the Jets squeaked out a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the MTS Centre on Sunday night. Needing a solid run to get back into the playoff race, the Jets host the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. READ MORE

A review of the East St. Paul police force, prompted by the death of Crystal Taman in a collision involving an officer, was completed.
