Predilection for penalties: It was a familiar script in Anaheim, Calif., last night when the Winnipeg Jets faced the Anaheim Ducks. The Jets took a bad penalty and the other team scored on the power play. Later, the Jets took another bad penalty and the other team scored again on the power play. The result was a 4-1 loss. Extreme domestic attack: Christopher Rutherford, 31, is charged with attempted murder after he allegedly drove the passenger side of his car into a parked semi-trailer at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 1 in Winnipeg. A 22-year-old woman, left trapped in the car while the driver fled on foot, was freed by emergency workers using the Jaws of Life and is listed in stable condition in hospital. READ MORE

Bus fares rise: People returning to work today will note Winnipeg Transit bus fares rose slightly with the new year. Regular cash fares are now $2.65, and bus ticket fares are $2.30, both increased by five cents. Monthly passes are now $88.55, up from $86.65 in 2015.
Traffic change: Saskatchewan Avenue will be closed to traffic at Omand’s Creek beginning today as city crews replace a bridge. The route is expected to be closed until June. A city news release says the “deteriorated, load-restricted timber bridge will be replaced with a modern, concrete bridge and a right turn lane from Empress Street to eastbound Saskatchewan Avenue will also be added.”

One-metre law: Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger is throwing his support behind a proposed new rule of the road affecting motorists and cyclists. Selinger says a call to force drivers to move over at least one metre when passing a cyclist is “a great idea” he would like to see become law. Ontario recently passed a one-metre law. READ MORE
Field of (bad) dreams: Manitoba’s Progressive Conservatives say, if elected this spring, they’ll re-examine the financing for Investors Group Field to rein in ballooning interest charges on what initially was a $160-million loan. That figure was $186.7 million at the end of March, which was $8.3 million more than the previous fiscal year due to additional interest charges. READ MORE

Refugee concerns: Advocates for several groups are worried the current focus on Syrian refugees will come at the expense of those from other countries who are also in danger. Last week, the federal Immigration Department sent a notice to sponsorship agreement-holders who oversee the private sponsorship of refugees, saying Syrian refugee applications will still be accepted, but other nationalities will be put on hold for now.
