More judges: Manitoba’s top provincial court judge is arguing for the appointment of more judges to deal with a greater volume of criminal charges and heavier court dockets. Couple mourned: A Winnipeg couple is being mourned after they were killed in an ambulance crash Thursday while vacationing in Cuba. Explosives in North End: Winnipeg police are expected to release further information this week about a dramatic entry into a North End home on the weekend as part of an investigation into the selling of stolen explosives on the black market. Two people were taken into custody. A justice source told the Free Press the case involves sticks of dynamite that can sell for $1,000 a piece on the black market. READ MORE

On Jan. 9, 1931: The Manitoba Free Press reported that two would-be bandits in separate incidents were foiled in their attempts to rob people on the streets of Winnipeg. In one, a victim struck a revolver-wielding man with such force he was able to escape the stick-up. In the second incident, a 17-year-old boy was accosted, but the thieves made off only with his rosary and beads. In Texas, a nurse single-handed saved five patients from a burning hospital, carrying them out herself, and then she carried out four cylinders of high-explosive gas from the operating room.
